Whilst the UK was under coronavirus restrictions many members used their time at home to delve into their slide collections and photo albums. Our social evenings were suspended but that didn't mean that we had to do without our regular fix. Our members and some of our scheduled presenters provided some great images to enjoy on the nights when we would otherwise have been meeting up.
Although there are no longer any updates to the gallery, it is still here to enjoy.......
--------------------------------
Our second August 2021 virtual presentation is a landmark because it will be the last Lockdown Gallery update. On 1st September the Society will host our first 'real' presentation since March 2020. So as this is a special occasion we have a few images from none other than the brilliant railway photographer and friend of the Society, Les Nixon.
--------------------------------
August is upon us and we have a typical English summer putting a dampener on any planned barbecues. For our first virtual presentation of the month, courtesy of Pennine member Andy Barclay, we have another selection of images from the late Peter Fox, founder of Platform 5 Publications and long term friend of the Society.
--------------------------------
Our second July gallery presentation sees most of the UK enjoying (or perhaps enduring?) a heatwave. For those of you who missed July's Zoom presentation by Bryan Johnson, we have a great selection of images from his presentation to enjoy here. Entitled 'Holidays in Europe and Beyond' Bryan's show followed on from his first show in 2017 and expanded the area to cover Europe, the Americas, Africa and Australasia. We think it was the first time we saw engines from Hong Kong at a 'Pennine' show.
--------------------------------
The first July presentation is heralded by very wet weather in the UK but coincides with the night that the England Football team play their Euro 2020 semi-final match at Wembley against Denmark. Good luck to England! Tony Caddick was our first Lockdown Gallery contributor and he has provided some images for tonight. We have a great selection of old and new images from the Norwich area trips past and present.
--------------------------------
Our second June gallery presentation and we're still enjoying fabulous sunny weather. For those of you who missed June's Zoom meeting by Andrew Watts, we have a great selection of images from his presentation to enjoy. Entitled 'Around the world in 180 images' Andrew's show took us to 38 countries across 4 continents, with digital images from his many trips over the last 20 years.
--------------------------------
Our first June virtual presentation finds us in the midst of some fabulous sunny weather, a huge improvement after a very wet May. John Zabernik has provided ten images from last year, mostly taken on bike trips around York, but some taken while at work when he was lucky enough to travel when most of us were under orders to 'stay home'.
--------------------------------
On 5th May we held our monthly Zoom meeting and Pennine member Robert Hay presented a brilliant show entitled 'Digital Memories 2007-2013'. The second of our May 2021 collections for the Lockdown Gallery is a sample from the images which Robert showed in his presentation.
--------------------------------
Our first May virtual presentation and the saying "ne'er cast a clout 'til May is out" seems very true this year. Rain and chilly wind seems to be the order of the day at the moment. Robin Patrick has provided the images to cheer everyone up. Robin has had a couple of local trips out, one to Colton Jnc to have a walk and to note how new overhead line structures now spoil the views on the Leeds line! The electrification is only to Church Fenton, about six miles from the junction and not to Leeds for now. Mainly for Transpennine Newcastle/Edinburgh trains, this is part of a two-year project of improvements. Robin has been advised only the Leeds line is being electrified from Colton South Jnc to Church Fenton although masts go over all four lines. The trains to use it are bi-mode 802's and currently change over power in York Station.
Robin had an afternoon walk for a change of scenery on Thursday 11th March 2021 and a stop at Colton on his way home. He saw four freight trains in 20 minutes at the changing scene of Colton South Jnc, with electrification work proceeding and exposed to the strong bitter cold wind that day.
--------------------------------
A lovely sunny evening for our second April virtual presentation and again we have something a little different with some light rail included in a set of images from Pennine member Glyn Gossan's recent social distancing local jaunts out.
--------------------------------
The date of what would have been our first April social evening brings us something a little different for our virtual presentation. Mick Barstow, retired East Coast Trains, Driver Team Manager, Kings Cross has kindly provided eight images from the night of 12th and 13th March 2012, the night of the southbound Pendolino test run on the ECML, from Craigentinny to Ferme Park.
--------------------------------
St Patrick's Day sees the date of our second March social evening. Our virtual presentation tonight is from Pennine member Rhys Jones. Rhys is hoping to draw the line under a terrible 2020 and is looking forward to spreading his wings once more in 2021. Fortunately, last year there were no restrictions on travelling back in time, so he took the opportunity to give the scanner some stick to digitise his slides and negatives. Although the scanning is still a work in progress, particularly cleaning, here are a few of Rhys’ digitised images. He is hoping that he will be allowed to return to the ones that are still possible during 2021.
--------------------------------
It is now a year since we had an actual social evening, in early March 2020, and the light at the end of the tunnel still seems some way off, although we now understand that over 20 million people have been vaccinated. We will continue to have images in our Lockdown Gallery on nights when we would have met up, but tonight we will also hold our first Zoom social event for members. The Lockdown Gallery images for tonight have been provided by Steve Armitage from his extensive collection. We look forward to the future when Steve can come again to present a show.
--------------------------------
Our second February social evening date is upon us and we are definitely seeing some signs of spring. For tonight's virtual event we have some images from the late Dave Marriott. Dave was a very keen railway photographer, living in Sheffield. He began with black and white film in the mid-1950s and continued to take photographs well into the last decade, by when he had accumulated a collection of many thousands of slides. His good friend, Pennine member Rhys Jones, recalls how on Saturdays in the 1980s they chased steam around the country. Friday night was always their planning night and in later years when Dave’s health had deteriorated, Friday night became their scanning night instead. Sadly in 2020 Dave passed away but the slides he treasured are still with us.
--------------------------------
On what would have been our first February social evening we hear news that we have reached a milestone in the UK of 10 million people being vaccinated. There yet again appears to be some light at the end of this long tunnel and perhaps we are one step nearer to meeting up again. Our images for tonight's virtual get together have been supplied by Andy Barclay and are a selection from the late Peter Fox, founder of Platform 5 Publications and long term friend of the Society.
--------------------------------
Editor of Today’s Railways UK and society member Robert Pritchard was due to present to us in April 2020 but this was one of the first meetings to be cancelled because of Covid-19. He will however be poised to present a new show “2020 – what a year” to us once we can safely resume meetings in 2021. In lieu of our second January social evening he presents a selection of his photos from 2020, one per month, during a year which presented an unexpected opportunity to observe traffic on a busy line in Lincolnshire.
--------------------------------
Happy New Year to all our members and friends. On what would have been our first social evening of the year the country is again in national lockdown, but with vaccinations happening at pace we can hopefully see light at the end of the tunnel. So we start the new year in style with a selection of photos from esteemed railway photographer Gavin Morrison.
--------------------------------
We celebrate what would have been our last social evening of the year with a pre-Christmas treat from the brilliant railway photographer and good friend of the Society, Les Nixon. The committee of the Pennine Railway Society join together to wish all of our members, friends and their families a Happy Christmas and we look forward to things getting back to normal as soon as possible in 2021. Meanwhile, enjoy this selection.
--------------------------------
December is upon us and the days are getting colder and shorter, but the good news is that there may soon be a vaccine to help to get us out of this lockdown period. Meanwhile Chris Nettleton has supplied a selection of images from his 'back catalogue' going back over 50 years. Enjoy!
--------------------------------
We're halfway through November now and already we are beginning to see that people are putting their Christmas decorations up. No decorations here yet, we're cheering everyone up with a selection of images from Glyn Gossan. Enjoy!
--------------------------------
Here we are in the first week of November, on the eve of both Guy Fawkes Night and another national lockdown. Instead of a box of fireworks Graeme Wade has provided a box full of recent images to enjoy.
--------------------------------
Heading towards the end of October, the clocks change this coming weekend and in South Yorkshire we will move into Tier 3 Covid regulations. So we all need cheering up. Graeme Lightfoot has provided some great images for tonight's cheer.
--------------------------------
Here we are in October already and our first meeting would have been a joint presentation by Roger Senior and John Zabernik. Roger's presentation, 'Train Doctor', will be rescheduled and includes the following images. It is based on his book 'Train Doctor: Trouble Shooting with Diesel and Electric Traction' and is the story of his career in the railway industry, from 1968 when he joined BR to his retirement from GNER. (Publisher Pen & Sword).
--------------------------------
Our second meeting date in September and our speaker was due to be Ted Hancock, a new presenter we had been looking forward to seeing for some time. In the absence of Ted delivering 'A Photographic Journey from Dore to Chinley in the steam era' in person, he has provided us with a few shots to whet our appetite for when he hopefully presents a show in 2021.
--------------------------------
September 2nd, our first Autumn meeting night and yet again we'd all have been out in the pouring rain. For tonight's gallery update Bryan Johnson has provided six pictures including a nostalgic view from Weymouth Quay.
--------------------------------
A very wet night for what would have been our second August meeting. The lockdown gallery tonight sees Pete Sargieson contributing a random selection of images from his large collection.
--------------------------------
The 5th August would have been our first meeting of the month and Pennine member Rhys Jones has provided the images for the latest update to the gallery. Rhys has specifically chosen seven shots which he is unlikely to be able to repeat. His first shot is of 80079 climbing towards Ffestiniog Tunnel and Rhys says that he would be very surprised if we see a 2-6-4T with 3 or 4 coaches again.
--------------------------------
The second July social evening is upon us. It's a balmy summer evening (not!) and to cheer everyone up here is a selection of shots from Steve Philpott.
--------------------------------
Well here we are on the 1st of July and another summer social evening missed. We would have had John Law presenting another great show, instead we have some photos from John to add to our gallery. John has chosen the topic of closed lines which he has travelled on. All the images are John's except Richard Huggins takes the credit for the Selsdon shot.
--------------------------------
The evening of 24th June would have been our annual trip to Barrow Hill. The weather is glorious and what a good evening it would have been. We look forward to next year but in the meantime here are a couple of pictures from Tony Caddick from our last visit.
--------------------------------
The second June social evening would have been 17th June. 3 days before the longest day! Since our last Lockdown Gallery update we have moved a little further forward as non-essential shops are now open. We're all looking forward to when Club 39 can re-open, but until it does the Gallery photos keep coming. The latest collection is from Robin Patrick. Enjoy!
--------------------------------
Wednesday 3rd June and the sunny period that we've been enjoying has come to an end with some welcome rain, well at least it has in Doncaster. We missed having Ken Grainger to present one of our shows in May so here we have a selection of photos from him for you to enjoy. They were published in his first ‘Derbyshire Lines’ book ‘Sheffield Victoria to Chesterfield Central’. The photographer is acknowledged under each photo.
--------------------------------
Wednesday 20th May and probably the warmest day of the year so far, in Doncaster at least. We are still in lockdown and cannot enjoy a slide presentation with a cold drink, but we can enjoy looking at a few images from Pennine trips of yesteryear from Chris Tyas.

1st May 1989 some Pennine members enjoying a trip to Blackpool on the 'Power to the Tower' railtour.

Wednesday 6th May would have been our first meeting in May. The weather is lovely and sunny but we are still in lockdown so here are some shots from our Chairman Robin Skinner.
